Gun Registry

Posted November 4, 2009

With increasing gun violence it would seem logical that we use a control system that provides demographic data about gun owners and the types of guns being bought and registered. This could identify trends in certain gun purchases and who is buying them. Permits should always be presented and verified when bullets are being purchased by the gun owners. It seems implausible that such information could not be used by local, national and international police to curb crime and even hold gun manufacturers and distributors liable for unscrupulous conduct.
I have always advocated and even presented to policing organizations, that bullets should be “serialized” because guns do not kill people, bullets do. The serialization process would determine where the bullets originated and would immediately identify an unscrupulous vendor, distributor or point of geographic origin.
Because of the known problems with recycled police department weapons we should also track police ownership of guns and their eventual disposition. The problem of seized weapons finding their way back into the mainstream should mean that these weapons should be destroyed!
Rifles should be stored in secure facilities and should be officially drawn for use (i.e. hunting and recreational use). In the absence of a gun registry, guns should be banned completely.
Thank you,
Joseph Pede
