The Instruments of Etiquette and Protocol

Posted September 30, 2009

When are we going to demand that politicians stop using these instruments to disguise questionable conduct? Not only have they created an impregnable system of personal protectionism but they have also used these instruments to stay access to a transparent system of justice. We have allowed politicians to escape accountability by legitimizing “discussion panels, boards of inquiry, inquests and political post-mortems”? Why are publicly elected members of government and appointed goodfellas not subjected to the same criminal process as the average citizen? Re-inventing the words of Wilfred Owen, “Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori”, citizens have become misguided casualties of political etiquette.
When politicians seem to encounter questionable conduct their recourse and penance appears to be summarized by the word “sorry”. Mulroney, a tax-evader, said sorry. Jean Chretien, involved in an illegal federal government subsidy to a marketing firm, said sorry. Mel Lastman left Toronto City Hall a quarter of a billion dollars short and said he was sorry. Mike Harris left politics in the shadow of murder and I don’t know what he said. Michael Bryant obviously apologized for his actions, but by the time his trial is over the cyclist will be sentenced to death, in absentia, for not having a bicycle license. The Masonic wheel was really out after that incident. Every front page newspaper focused on bad cyclist behaviour the morning after.
The “Canadian Corruption Content Index” is difficult to measure because access to information is very difficult to obtain. The following is an excerpt from http://www.cna-acj.ca/en/news/freedom-information/national-groups-urge-harper-follow-obama-s-example -  the situation in Canada is remarkable. "There's less information being released by government than ever before,” federal Information Commissioner Robert Marleau told the Canadian Press Thursday, describing the situation as “alarming." In an interview in La Presse, Marleau said information management in the federal government is bordering on a crisis.
If Ignatieff and Layton bring down the current government then Canadian citizens should be demanding the following from their new and incumbent candidates; 1. How were they selected/appointed, 2. Who are their major sponsors/supporters, 3. Are they a member of a Masonic Lodge and accountable to the Lodge and not the Canadian Taxpayer, 4. What is their educational background and has it been verified, 5. Will they pursue an open voting system and not subject themselves to party loyalty, 6. Will they vote to abolish an appointed and nepotistic senate, and finally, fire and then seek recompense from all family members and friends hired by federal government employees over the past two decades. Our deficit will disappear! As one close friend recently remarked, “My nephew just got a federal government job. He certainly did not qualify and he certainly did not have the education, but my sister knew someone and now he is set for life”. The poor student that spent an enormous amount of time and money pursuing a graduate or professional degree just got screwed by an incompetent boob who knows another idiot. This my friends is corruption, theft and a criminal offence.
Thank you,
Joseph Pede
